Context

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to the creation of sophisticated deepfakes, which pose significant threats to digital authenticity. Deepfakes are manipulated audio-visual content that can deceive even the most discerning individuals, leading to the spread of misinformation and disinformation. The widespread adoption of social media platforms contributes even more to this phenomenon and can adversely affect societies; and it could be the largest concern of the mainstream media forensics task force in the time coming before 2030. Nevertheless, AI can also play a crucial role in combating disinformation and misinformation. Advanced AI-driven systems can analyse patterns, language use and context to aid in content moderation, fact-checking and the detection of false information. Understanding the nuances between misinformation (unintentional spread of falsehoods) and disinformation (deliberate spread) – as is crucial for effective countermeasures – could also be facilitated by AI analysis of content.

This situation highlights the importance of fostering a local and continental understanding and cooperation to tackle the spread of false information facilitated by the rise of human-made content and AI technologies.

This DeepTech summit’s Deepfake competition launched by UM6P’s School of Computing in partnership with Startgate aims to create the first platform for different stakeholders to come together and start building solutions that can enhance the role of AI in combating deepfakes and digital misinformation, while overcoming with the challenges and limitations of the existing AI technologies in detecting and preventing these threats.

We invite applications to submit AI-based methodologies/techniques, apps or other platforms with innovative ideas on their use in detecting and preventing misinformation and disinformation threats.

This competition is open to:

  • Moroccan students and researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, and media studies
  • Moroccan Industry Professionals specializing in AI, cybersecurity, and media technology.
  • Moroccan Tech Startups and innovators
  • AI and Machine Learning Enthusiasts
  • Nonprofits and NGOs based in Morocco: Organizations focused on media literacy and misinformation

The deadline for submitting your ideas and solutions to our DeepTech summit platform is 13th of April 2025.

The projects will be assessed by International Academic and industry experts and three prizes will be awarded during a ceremony held at the DeepTech summit in Morocco-Benguerir (8-9 May):

  • Prize 1 : 50000 DH
